The day, by shift

A day built around hospital shifts

Doors open at 5:30 a.m. for early starts and stay open until 8:00 p.m. for the end of a long day. The room routine in between stays the same, so a drop-off at 7:00 and a pickup at 3:00 both feel unhurried.

Who may enroll

Who may enroll, and in what order

Romper is the center for a hospital system's staff and the neighbors around it. Places go in this order, and within each group in the order families joined the list.

  1. 01
    First

    Step 1: Brothers and sisters

Families with a child already at Romper come first, for the same schedule and as soon as a room has a place.

  2. 02
    Second

    Step 2: Hospital staff

Next come nurses, technicians, residents and everyone else who works for the hospital system, on any shift. We ask to see a staff badge at the tour.

  3. 03
    Third

    Step 3: Neighbors

Families who live nearby come after staff, and join the same list. A neighbor who joins early still goes ahead of one who joins later.

  4. 04
    Last

Step 4: Sridhar confirms your place

When a room has a place, Sridhar calls to confirm the room, the shift schedule and the first day. He explains where your family stands before then, if you ask.

Safety routines

  • A handoff at every door

A teacher meets you at the room door at every shift change. We release a child only to the people you list in writing, and we ask for ID from anyone we don't know.

  • When your shift runs over

Call and tell us. Your child stays with a teacher they know until you arrive, and Sridhar or a lead teacher stays until the last child has gone home at 8:00 p.m.

  • Cribs and sleep

Infants sleep on their backs, in their own cribs, with nothing else in the crib.

  • Allergies

Tell us about any allergy at the tour. Once you enroll, we ask again in private, and the room's teachers learn it before the first day.

  • Clean hands

Every room washes hands on arrival, before meals and after outdoor play. Staff and visitors do the same.

  • Drills

Each room practices fire and weather drills with the teacher who leads it, at different times of day so early and late groups practice too.

Our team

The people at your child's door

Every room has a lead teacher you will meet at the tour, and the same faces are at the door at the start and the end of the day.

  • Sridhar Murthy, director, in a teal sweater, seated by a wall of cubbies

    Sridhar Murthy

    Director

Sridhar runs Romper and stands at the door himself at shift change. He speaks English and Telugu, and he explains the enrollment order and the shift schedule at your tour.

  • Eloise Hampton, infant room lead, in a sage sweatshirt beside a low shelf of baskets

    Eloise Hampton

    Infant room lead

Eloise cares for our youngest children and keeps a note for each family at pickup: feedings, naps and what your baby tried today.

  • Jhoanna Corpuz, twos and threes lead, in a mint polo in a classroom doorway

    Jhoanna Corpuz

    Twos and Threes lead

Jhoanna moves between the Twos and Threes rooms, so children already know her face when they move up. She is at the door for the 7:00 a.m. drop-off.

  • Odilia Abarca, fours room lead, in a terracotta cardigan with a lanyard in a classroom doorway

    Odilia Abarca

    Fours room lead

  • “The pickup window at shift change is the part I did not know I needed. Nobody rushes me, and I leave with a note on how the day went.”

Questions

What families ask us

Who may enroll, and in what order?

Brothers and sisters of children already here come first, then hospital staff on any shift, then neighbors. Within each group, places go in the order families joined the list, and Sridhar confirms each place by phone.

What are your hours?

We are open Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and closed on weekends. We are not open overnight.

How does a shift change work?

From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., teachers are at every room door for pickups and drop-offs, so families coming off one shift and going on to the next both get a proper handoff.

Is Romper licensed?

Yes. We are licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, and the board on this site shows how many children each teacher cares for in every room.

How does tuition work?

It depends on your child's room and the shift you choose. Our how tuition works page explains what sets it, how a place is held and how families pay, and we go through it with you by phone or at a tour.

Can I tour after my shift?

Yes. Tours run any weekday, and the open house in August has an evening window for families coming off a shift.
